While much of the world is focused on rising geopolitical tensions and the fear of economic uncertainty, India’s entertainment industry is quietly going through a difficult phase of its own. The recent push for energy saving measures and tighter spending across sectors has added to the pressure, and the impact is now being felt deeply inside Bollywood and television production circles.
According to a survey conducted by The Top India, conversations with more than 1,000 people connected to the entertainment industry revealed a worrying reality. A large number of workers say they are either getting very little work or are being paid far less than before. Many claimed that even when projects are available, payments have dropped by nearly 50 to 60 percent compared to earlier years.
The problem is not affecting the industry’s biggest stars. Top actors and established names continue to command high fees and steady projects. The real struggle is being faced by the thousands of professionals who work behind the scenes and keep the industry running every day.
Character artists, assistant directors, makeup artists, gym trainers attached to actors, lightmen, camera operators, spot staff, production assistants, editors, equipment suppliers, and technical crews are among the worst affected. Many of them depend entirely on daily shoots and project-based payments. When productions slow down, their income disappears almost immediately.
Several industry workers say the slowdown has been building for months. Film budgets are becoming tighter, digital platforms are spending more carefully, and producers are delaying projects due to uncertainty in the market. As a result, mid-level and junior workers are finding it harder to secure continuous employment.
The situation becomes even more serious in a city like Mumbai, where the cost of living is already extremely high. Most production houses, casting offices, and entertainment companies are based in areas like Andheri, Juhu, and Bandra. Renting even a modest apartment in these areas can cost around ₹50,000 per month, sometimes more.
For workers whose payments have been cut in half, surviving in the city is becoming a daily challenge.
Many technicians and support staff are reportedly dipping into savings, borrowing money from friends and relatives, or taking up temporary side jobs just to manage rent and household expenses. Some have even returned to their hometowns after failing to find consistent work in Mumbai.
Industry insiders also point out that the entertainment sector works like a chain. When fewer films and shows go on floors, everyone connected to the ecosystem feels the impact. A delayed production does not only affect actors. It affects hundreds of people attached to a single project, from costume suppliers and set workers to camera rental companies and transport providers.
There is also growing concern about delayed payments. Many freelancers claim they now have to wait months to receive money for completed work. For workers living paycheck to paycheck, this delay creates additional stress and uncertainty.
Despite the difficult conditions, many professionals continue to stay hopeful. Some believe the industry could recover once production activity increases again and audience spending improves. Others feel there needs to be stronger financial planning within production houses to protect workers during slower periods.
What is clear, however, is that behind the glamour of India’s entertainment world lies a large workforce struggling quietly through one of its toughest phases in recent years. The spotlight may remain on red carpets and blockbuster announcements, but thousands of people working behind the camera are currently fighting a much more personal battle — the challenge of survival in one of the country’s most expensive cities.
